I found my garden under a covering of Creeping Charlie, Sir Charles around here. And after I uncovered it I realized gardening is a lot of work, but worth it.
We have already clipped the outside leaves of lettuces and used the shallot greens, now getting thick, in salads, very tasty.
The broccoli is growing strong and tall and I thinned out the beets. I didn’t want to cull because I love beets, and so I replanted them all and now I have a lot of beet plants.
The peas and beans are climbing the fence and flowering, so there is a lot of bee buzz going on. My tomatoes are climbing up their frames and I see flower buds today. The kale, chards, and mustard greens are gaining vigor, especially after I released them from the Sir Charles death hold.
But the biggest disappointment is the corn, I was almost completely skunked, with only four corn stalks growing in two rows that I planted.
But, for my first garden, it is certainly fun. I enjoy it, my family is amazed, and the bird houses on the garden fence are actively raising House Wrens which means at about 5:30 AM every morning I awaken to birds singing. Quite pleasant.

Naga's back!
Hey, it's good to see you again. Hope you're doing better than your corn!
You know, I've been meaning to blog about the number of pollinators I've been seeing, too. I swear I'm seeing more bees this year than the last few years combined. Butterflies, too. My garden i sutterly aflutter.
Hey. Did you read about Kathleen Merrigan? :)
Kathleen Merrigan and her posse
Well, if you mean the statement about 'get ready y'all', yes. And, she repeated herself a few times at different functions. And, she is gathering a posse to test and secure, once and for all, the good name of certified organic. I am especially liking the apropriations. Slight as the amount may seem, ($500,000) certified organic just got their formal entre into inspection and enforcement by the inspector general of the USDA.
I think you are more than right, the food fight is about to get really interesting. And from my vantage, it may be time to hang back and watch Big Organic duke it out in the media and with new labels.
