This is the bread of breads. I’ve watched grown men eat an entire loaf in one sitting. It’s man bread; stuffed full of herbs and cheese and cheese. It could make them cry, particularly if you add in some bacon. Give a guy, any guy, fist full of chubble, a beer and a football game and that would make his year, even if he hates beer and football. I’m not kidding.
Women pretty much just hide the bread from their husbands. I'm not kidding about that either. They make a decoy loaf and then hide the rest for themselves. Can you believe there are actually people who think women are dumb?

Have you ever seen a community rally together to raise a barn? I haven't. In fact, I didn't even understand the importance of a barn until I started learning about Shepherd's Way Farms, and how their lack of a barn has put them at risk of losing their land. Barns can house hay and farm equipment, but they also provide necessary shelter for the farm's animals. A barn is a safe, dry place for baby animals to be born and raised, which allows farmers to maintain and grow their herd or flock. With no barn, this is very difficult to do.
It must be tough writing a book about good food. Because you can't give readers a literal taste of what you're talking about, all you can do is try and convince people that you have a superfine palate and keep using words like "delicious" and "yummy" over and over. Read more...
I'm playing catch-up on a couple things after my horrible laptop crisis. One, of real importance to Minnesotan locavores, is the debut of Rochdale Farms cheese and butter. Jill Lewis at Heavy Table has the full breakdown on these new items, which have debuted at local, Twin Cities grocery co-ops, and which use milk from local Amish, sustainable, and organic dairy farms. Read up -- it's a good piece. Read more...
Hey all, I'm up early preparing fresh mozzarella for a 10 a.m. meeting. Being from Wisconsin, I like to think that cheesemaking is an ability that was bred into me at inception, but the truth of the matter is, certain cheeses are just really, really easy to make. Case in point: mozzarella. If you're a beginner, I suggest you start out with a cheese making kit, like this one from Ricki Carroll, who is also known as The Cheese Queen of New England. I'll be reproducing her recipe later on, but to see pictures and a step-by-step guide, go here. Read more...
Fresh apples. Rich sharpness of cheddar. Sweet caramelized onions. And bacon -- you can never go wrong with the smoky loveliness of bacon! This recipe is a real crowd pleaser, just packed with flavor, so keep it in mind if friends are coming over to watch a baseball or football game this October. A quick and easy quesadilla, you'll want to keep this one in your repetoire with holiday parties around the corner.
I recommend a good sweet-tart apple for this recipe, like a Braeburn or a young Fuji. Enjoy, Food Fighters!
