BANANAS: how many social injustices does it take to break a world record?

Let me get this right. Can Dole really tout themselves as both a fair trade banana importer  while simultaneously breaking the world record for the largest banana display?

Seriously, it’s worth watching the video – and check out the price on the heap of over 1,650 cases of bananas. Remember, this transpired in August 2009 NOT 1959.

20cents a pound at the retail level?! Well done Moneybags Murdock, that’s a heck of a fair trade! No wonder investors have so much faith in your business decisions.

……of course David Murdock didn’t really take the hit on that. Much like the rest of the cheap banana commodity he and his billionaire cronies have propped up throughout every supermarket across the U.S.

Whether it’s 29 cents or 59 cents per lb., the price of a vertically-integrated, multinational “cheap and yellow” banana is subsidized by the physical, financial and environmental well-being of farmers and farmer workers throughout Latin America – put that in your banana pipe and smoke it!

In the end, the only thing more exciting than 66,000 lbs. of bananas is that you finally have a choice in the produce aisle.
