It’s a hoot when Goliaths start warring, ain’t it? Makes the job of Fair Food Fighters soooo much easier when, say, Starbucks decides to rework bakery recipes to exclude high fructose corn syrup (LA Times).
This is significant only in the long view, however. Fewer tons of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) mean fewer acres of corn planted, and less of a cropopoly on corn. The potential for greater biodiversity is about the best we can hope for when these two Villains fight. The alternative to HFCS is sugar, of course, and we discussed back in March what a b.s. alternative it it is. Furthermore, since Starbucks’ dedication to Fair Trade coffee runs about as deep as their own labor practices, our hands are not blistered from applauding.
So it’s a mucky fight with dirty fighters, but we can’t deny how fun it is to watch King Corn take another pop in the chops. For El Dragón, it’s a little watching the Packers play the Bears – someone loses. What’s not to like??
(On a side note, as you may have noticed, our blog posts on Fair Food Fight can be dedicated to particular “fights,” that is, causes in the battle for sane, independent, and localized food. This post, for example, bears my user pic — so handsome! — and our handy-dandy icon for King Corn, ye olde cob with a gas nozzle stuck in it. Click on Current Fights, and you can see all the “bouts” we’re battling, and meet the Villains of the Fair Food Fight universe, too.)
